Emotional wellness is something that is often ignored in our society. We are taught to “suck it up” and deal with our problems on our own. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the best approach. In fact, there are a few emotional wellness mistakes that can impact your life negatively.

In this blog post, we will discuss five of these mistakes and give you some tips on how to overcome them!

Ignoring your feelings and pretending like everything is okay.

The first emotional wellness mistake is ignoring your feelings and pretending like everything is okay. This can be detrimental to your health because it doesn’t allow you to process what you are feeling. If you are constantly suppressing your emotions, it will take a toll on your mental and physical health.

Try to take some time every day to check in with yourself emotionally. Acknowledge how you are feeling and why you may be feeling that way. This will help you to process your emotions in a healthy way.

Here are some good questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you happy with who you are?
The answer to this question can be a good indicator of your emotional state. If you are not happy with who you are, it may be time to make some changes in your life.
  • Do you feel called to a specific purpose or passion in life?
If you don’t feel called to anything specific, that’s okay! But if you have a passion or purpose that you’re not pursuing, it may be time to reevaluate your life.
  • Are you open-minded to new ideas and people?
If you find yourself shut down, it could be time to look inward to understand why. Being open to new ideas and people helps you grow as a person. It also allows you to see the world from different perspectives and can help build empathy for others.

These are just a few questions to get you started on the path to emotional wellness!

Judging yourself for your emotions and not being forgiving.

The second emotional wellness mistake is judging yourself for your emotions and not being forgiving. It’s important to remember that everyone experiences a range of emotions. You are not weak or flawed because you feel sadness, anger, or anxiety.

Instead of beating yourself up for the way you feel, try to be understanding and compassionate. Allow yourself to feel whatever it is you are feeling without judgment. By understanding the cause of the emotions, you can start to gain control over your emotions.

Try these affirmations next time you’re feeling down on yourself:

I am feeling _____ because _____.

I am allowed to feel __________.

It’s okay that I’m feeling ___________ right now.

I forgive myself for ___________.

Dwelling on the past and not giving yourself time to heal.

The third emotional wellness mistake is dwelling on the past and not giving yourself time to heal. In order to begin processing your emotions, you need to allow yourself to grieve. This means giving yourself time to mourn the loss of what could have been—or having grace for the mistakes that you’ve made.

It’s okay to feel sad about what has happened in your life. But, it’s important to move on from those feelings eventually. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself stuck in a rut.

If you dwell on the past, you will never be able to move forward. Instead, give yourself permission to grieve and then focus on the present.

Follow these journaling exercises to help process your past experiences:

  • What happened that I need to grieve?
  • How do I feel about it?
  • What are some things I can do to help myself heal?
  • Who can I talk to about this experience?
  • When did I first start feeling this way?

Not seeking professional help when you need it.

The fourth emotional wellness mistake is not seeking professional help when you need it. Many people feel like they should be able to handle their emotions on their own. However, there is nothing wrong with seeking help from a therapist or counselor.

If you struggle to cope with your emotions, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance.

Reasons seeking professional help can be beneficial:

  • You will have someone to talk to who is unbiased and objective.
  • You will learn new coping mechanisms and tools to deal with your emotions.
  • You will gain a better understanding of yourself and your emotional triggers.
  • You will have accountability to help you make progress in your emotional journey.
  • They can provide tools and resources for emotional wellness.

If you decide to seek professional help, do your research. Choose a therapist you feel comfortable with and who specializes in the areas you need help.

Using unhealthy coping mechanisms instead of facing your emotions.

The fifth emotional wellness mistake is using unhealthy coping mechanisms instead of working through your emotions. For example, some people turn to alcohol, drugs, or other destructive behaviors when they are feeling emotional pain.

While these things may provide temporary relief, they will ultimately make your situation worse. If you struggle to cope with your emotions, try to find healthy ways to deal with them.

Examples of healthy coping mechanisms:

  • Exercise
  • Take a walk outside.
  • Write in a journal.
  • Create art or music
  • Listen to music
  • Read a book
  • Find a hobby

By establishing healthy rhythms to manage stress, you will be equipped to deal with emotional challenges when they arise.

Ready to start your journey to emotional wellness?

Take some time for yourself each day to check in on your emotional well-being. Make sure you are taking care of yourself both physically and emotionally. By doing so, you can avoid making these emotional wellness mistakes. If you make a mistake, be compassionate with yourself and remember that everyone makes them. What counts is how you learn and grow from them.

Seeking emotional wellness is a journey, not a destination. So, be patient with yourself as you travel on this path. And most importantly, enjoy the ride!
